The project

Te Ara o Te Ata/Mt Messenger Bypass is a 6 km bypass road in North Taranaki that aims to replace the existing stretch of winding and often closed section of State Highway 3 connecting Taranaki to Waikato. The project involves extensive bat management, with radio-tracking to identify roost locations and ongoing vegetation removal for road alignment and works access.

The work

We provided specialist bat ecology oversight and services for enactment of consent condition pre-felling and pre- de-risking operation bat surveys. We led deployment and analysis of AR4 acoustic loggers, thermal and acoustic roost emergence and dawn watch surveys, arborist tree inspections, felling oversight and post-felling checks for bats during tree felling and tree de-risking operations.
We provided reviews for the project Bat Management Plan and reporting to council for consent requirements.
We lead community engagement by presenting bat information to local school children, and developed new neoprene flap non-invasive de-risking methods to replace expanding foam.
