The project
The Eglington Research Project is a long-term, Tier 3 DOC project in the Eglinton Valley of Fiordland, NZ. This conservation and wildlife management project blends cutting edge science with positive conservation outcomes for a range of threatened species, including mōhua, kaka, ruru, marsh crake, long tailed bats, short tailed bats and more.
The project also provides extensive training opportunities to consultants looking to gain skills in bat ecology.
The WORK
Mike was employed as the Lead Field Technician for a total of 5 seasons, overseeing day-to-day operations, management of staff and volunteers, development of new survey methods, testing of new technology and reporting of results to managers in the central office.
Mike also provided extensive training in bat capture, handling and radio-tracking to a large number of consultants from various companies across Aotearoa.
