The Project

Rangitōpuni Pekapeka is a new project in the works bringing together Te Kawerau a Maki, Community Waitakere, Kaipatiki Project, The Ecology Studio Ltd and Tou-Roa Ecology to set up a new community monitoring program for long tailed bats in the Rangitōpuni/Riverhead Forest area.

Scope of work

The Work

We were brought in as the specialist bat ecologist and advisor for the Kaipatiki Project, responsible for interpreting the project's acoustic survey data, producing reports for funding applications, planning project timeframes, preparing the Wildlife Act permit, and overseeing the catch-and-tag programme. We also introduced Marc Choromanski of The Ecology Studio Ltd to bring additional local bat expertise to an already highly skilled pool of stakeholders. The project is due to begin in November 2026.
