Kakahu Pekapeka

One of our most rewarding Legacy Projects:

Kakahu Pekapeka is a public/private partnership between Te Papa Atawhai Geraldine and Tou-Roa Ecology to provide long term population monitoring of Critically Endangered long tailed bats at minimal cost to DOC via private funding through training services - the first of its kind in NZ.
This project offers training in bat ecology to private consultants, who fund the ongoing work at the site and provide valuable boots on the ground for the capture and radio-tracking for the long term mark-remark study.

Tou-Roa Ecology offers training opportunities to consultant ecologists from across the country to enable them to upskill in bat catch-and-tag surveys and to contribute towards long term monitoring of the population of long tailed bats at Kakahu, Geraldine. Working closely with DOC trainee bat ecologists, we provide ongoing training and support for both the Geraldine DOC staff looking to upskill in conservation techniques for bats, and to consultants looking to upskill in bat management for consultancy.
The result is full advanced catch and tag surveys for the long tailed bats at zero cost the DOC and the production of highly-skilled consultant bat ecologists across the country.
