About us

The Project

Finding Franklin Bats is a joint initiative project by Auckland Council and EcoQuest to capture and monitor Critically Endangered long tailed bats around the Franklin area in South Auckland. This project pulls together students and staff from EcoQuest, staff from Auckland Council, Iwi members from Ngāti Te Ata Waiōhua and countless volunteers to monitor how bats are using the fragmented rural landscape.

Scope of work

The Work

Working with bat ecologist Natasha Bansal from EcoQuest, Ben Paris from Auckland Council, Billy McLean from Tree Wise Guys and many others.

We provide specialist bat ecology oversight and training to staff and volunteers for this long-term project. We oversee the capture and tagging of free flying bats and the capture and processing of bats at maternity roosts, as well as providing training in full catch and tag methods for monitoring bats.
We also provide technical advice and oversight for some related projects.
